President Uhuru Kenyatta has asked Kenyans to remain united ahead of the highly contested presidential race to see his deputy William Ruto and his foe-turned-ally Raila Odinga face off.

Uhuru, addressing a crowd at a whistle-stop rally in Homabay county, beseeched locals to embrace peace and tranquillity as the nation heads to a season of high octane politics.

"We want a peaceful environment and a united country in this year of elections. That is the spirit of the handshake that will enable us to embark on the journey we envisaged as a united nation. I will soon make another trip to this region with Raila Odinga for a meet-the-people tour," he said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta made an impromptu visit to Kisumu Port to inspect the ongoing construction of a modern shipyard by the military personnel.

The Head of State was accompanied by Chief of General Staff Robert Kibochi and was shown around and updated on the construction status.
