Veteran politician Koigi Wamwere is the latest aspirant to pique interest in the Nakuru senatorial seat in this year's polls.

Wamwere announced that he will be vying for the senatorial seat on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket.

“I will be vying for the Nakuru County Senatorial seat in 2022 on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket, and I’m confident I will clinch the party ticket,” he said.

The veteran politician appealed to Nakuru residents to vet all senatorial aspirants and establish whether they are committed to good governance and to fighting corruption.

“I appeal to the residents of Nakuru County to do due diligence on all candidates vying for the senator seat and vet them to establish whether they are committed to fighting corruption and bad governance based on their past record,” Wamwere said.

Wamwere unsuccessfully vied for the seat in the 2017 general elections but lost in the Jubilee party primaries to Susan Kihika.

He is expected to battle it out with former Nakuru Level Five Hospital medical superintendent Joseph Mburu, footballer-turned-politician Mike Weche, youthful politician Davis Ruto and Andrew Yatich in the August polls.

Nominated Member of Parliament (MP) Gideon Keter, Molo Member of Parliament (MP) Kuria Kimani and Keroche Breweries chief Tabitha Karanja have also declared their interest to succeed current Senator Susan Kihika.

Kihika has since declared her intentions to supplant Lee Kinyanjui as the next Nakuru county governor.
