Mumias East Member of Parliament Benjamin Washiali has opened up for the first time to explain what happened to Jubilee Party legislators who were chief agents for the party candidate McDonald Mariga in the just concluded Kibra by-election.

Speaking on Monday, the MP said they were under the mercy of God because the police officers told them they were there to guard ballot boxes only.

"The police officers told us that their responsibility was to guard ballot boxes and ballot papers. Us, we were at the mercy of God. We are lucky that we survived. The thugs who were there were big (sic)," he said.

Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale and other politicians were captured engaging the youth in running battles during the voting day.

Part of the violence was as a result of claims of voter bribery.

Malava MP Malulu Injedi was injured at Mashimoni area after chaos broke out.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has since said investigations into the violence during the by-election have been launched.

The DPP said that persons behind the chaos would be held personally responsible and charged in court once the investigations are complete.
