Wiper leadership has commenced talks between former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo over the party’s ticket for Mombasa governorship, with the view of having one aspirant between the two cleared to join the race to succeed Hassan Joho as the second Governor of the port city.

This comes amidst reports that the possibility of having the duo joining the Mombasa governorship race as a candidate and a running mate were also part of the discussions at the Wiper Democratic Party headquarters in Nairobi.

“The discussions are still ongoing. We are in a meeting. Once we reach a conclusive finality then you shall get the report,” said Wiper Secretary General Shakila Abdalla in a telephone interview with People Daily when contacted.

Mbogo confirmed yesterday that he was attending a meeting with Wiper officials in Nairobi and promised to avail himself for an interview once he is back to Mombasa.

On Mondany Abdalla confirmed that Sonko has joined the race to succeed Joho as the next Mombasa Governor.

She said as a member of Wiper, Sonko has the right to vie for a political position of his choice in any part of the country.

The development is likely to upset the already hotly contested Mombasa governorship into a three horse race pitting Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir, businessman Suleiman Shahbal and Sonko, the new entrant.

Reports about Sonko joining the Mombasa gubernatorial race have continued to spark reactions amongst residents and various political commentators.

“Let Ali Mbogo be the deputy Governor and Sonko will successfully win Mombasa governorship… I think I have got someone to give my vote,” said Peter Muia, a resident of Changamwe.
