With the social distancing measures now in place in Nairobi, it is not safe to go outside unnecessarily, and well this famous butchery on Waiyaki way couldn’t let their yummy street delicacy wait until people could go out again, they are delivering right at your doorstep.

Technology has changed our lives in the most diverse ways and as much as it has its disadvantages, it has proven to be quite the force during this pandemic.

People have become more innovative coming up with great trends attractive to the different consumer ages.

Case in point, last week while on a road trip to Kitale, I came across a van restaurant.

It was basically, a moving van with seats and tables and you can dine in it, creative right?

I’m such a meat lover, if your are our ardent reader, you are in the know by now.

But my passion for meat runs deeper than the mouth-watering taste it has to offer.

I recently met Tyrus Kamau who runs a butchery in Muthiga along Waiyaki way known as Zulu Meats.

The butchery has been in existence for nine months now and foodies seem to love them!

Kamau initially wanted to run a typical brick and mortar butchery with some grilling on the side.

The location is quite prime for walk-in clients, especially since the surroundings are inhabited by an upwardly mobile working-class and several bars constituting bout 80 per cent of their kitchen consumers.

Mutura home deliveries

“I love to grill and I had been toying around with the idea of turning my passion into business by tweaking the choma experience slightly,” Kamau recounts.

“Once the Covid-19 pandemic hit us and the government directed that eateries only do take away, I saw an opportunity to deliver our signature mutura, a traditional blood sausage, to people’s residences,” he adds.

But since most people would not pay a delivery fee for just mutura, he added fresh cuts of beef, goat, lamb and chicken to the delivery menu.

When you order meat from Zulu Meats, it comes in a well-packaged brown bag, which is thermally insulated to prevent food from getting cold or warm.

Kamau says that it is not only a practical move, but it is also deliberate so that he could leave a lasting impression.

In the world of social media, we love to share our experiences, and mostly what we are eating.

You know what they say in those streets if you did not snap it, it never happened?

Well, it is the sole reason why brands are keen on the packaging.

The butchery’s sitting space is limited, so I had ordered a few different cuts of beef and chicken including mutura for take out.

Unexplainable taste

The fillings that make mutura what it is are the intestine-encased mixture of minced pieces of cow or goat meat, tripe, and cooled blood that’s been flavoured with onions, salt, pepper, chilli and coriander.

Their Mutura has an unexplainable taste. It is simply a complicated haven and the pieces are relatively sizeable and come with chilli on the side just in case you like it spicy.

I also had their juicy goat that was so succulent and juicy. I love the fact that when you order your, food you get it piping hot, just the way many like it, especially if it’s meat.

Also, I had chicken that is made either with a plain or spicy marinade.

The chicken was tender and heavy on flavour. The goat was fairly meaty and quite thick at parts.

The difference between its thickest and thinnest parts was notably flavourful.

I also loved the fact that they roast with salt enough to taste, which enables you to avoid using any additional salt.

Although everybody prefers the delivery service Kamau says at first it was a big challenge especially because they would get inundated with huge orders and they would fail to deliver on time.

However, he saw an opportunity to work with boda boda riders and so instead of purchasing bikes he, works with the locals who have thermal insulated bags.

In case you want to curate your order, you have the option of choosing what you want and how you would like it made, including the different marinades.

They have attractive offers on Thursdays and Fridays, which features a meal pack with grilled options of either beef ribs or half a Kilogramme of goat meat with two bottels of either  a non alcoholic or alcoholic beverage.

And when you place an order, it is delivered in just 40 minutes or less within Nairobi and its environs.
