Kenya Railways has started a travel magazine to promote Kenyan tourism destinations, enhance orderliness and avert boredom for Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) travellers.

The free magazine courtesy of Saharamedia dubbed Safarini will focus on lifestyle and local tourism destinations.

Unlike most magazines which informative and entertainment segments only, it includes an insert for children’s segment.

Speaking during the official launch of the magazine at the Syokimau Terminus, Nairobi, Kenya Railways Corporation director Hellen Karu Wamuiga said 6,000 copies would be availed daily for passengers using Madaraka Express to and from Nairobi Mombasa.

Karu said they consulted travellers on their travel needs aboard the SGR before mooting the idea for the publication. “The idea of including a children’s segment was informed by the need to cater for families,” she said.

She said the management was optimistic that the standoff between Mombasa transporters and the SGR would soon be resolved.

“We intend to market tourism destinations and give Kenyans details of existing destinations and eventually promote domestic tourism,” said the magazine’s general manager Samah Hassan.

Simon Kabu of Bonfire Adventure said inclusion of reading culture was critical to those wishing to travel quietly.

“Three hours of traveling requires a variety of refreshment to enhance the travel experience,” said Kabu.

The travellers will read and but not take way copies of the magazine which will be published quarterly.
