2022 succession: Inside Karua, Kuria, Kiunjuri’s alliance ahead of polls
NARC Kenya party leader Martha Karua, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and former Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri have unveiled an alliance ahead of the 2022 general elections.
While addressing the press on Thursday, August 12, Kuria with his Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) and Kiunjuri's The Service Party's (TSP)teamed up with Karua's NARC Kenya in a move to cater for the interests of Mt Kenya and the nation as a whole.
“We commit to working together on issues affecting our region and nation. This initiative in the next three months will culminate into the ‘Limuru 3’ conference where we can be able to make resolutions on how to conduct our affairs,” Karua said.
The three leaders however dismissed claims or assertions that their alliance was an early move in identifying possible suitors ahead of next year's polls with Kiunjuri insisting that TSP will be on the ballot comes 2022.
“TSP will be on the ballot. We are going to approach other members, an initiative must start somewhere. We are focused on uniting our region and uniting the nation,” Kiunjuri said.
The former CS further invited like minded leaders from Mt Kenya to join them stating that the three came together to address the issues facing Mt Kenya region.
While fronting the interest of his Chama Cha Kazi, Moses Kuria distanced himself from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which is associated with Deputy President William Ruto and his former outfit the People's Empowerment Party (PEP) adding that his interest is solely in his own party.
“Am firmly behind Chama Cha Kazi, and for the meeting that happened in Karen was a meeting for UDA members and as a party leader I was not invited and that is not the only meeting that I haven’t been invited to. I wasn’t invited in Mombasa for example so there is nothing strange about it,” Kuria said.
The meeting by the three leaders comes after Karua met National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi on Saturday, August 7.
According to sources close to the Speaker's office, the two leaders who met at Village Market in Nairobi discussed regional unity, political and economic development of the region, and youth empowerment.
Sources say the two agreed on the need to bring together more leaders who support the welfare of the Mt Kenya region.
“Muturi, the National Assembly Speaker, sought the support of the Narc Kenya Party leader in forging a joint political agenda moving forward,” part of the statement from the Speaker's office read.
