The Kiambu county government plans to disburse Sh300 million this year in bursary allocations, targeting 24,000 beneficiaries.

“The previous administration had allocated Sh100 million to the kitty for the 2022/23 financial year, which will be disbursed within the next two weeks, but I have also appropriated an additional Sh100 million through a supplementary budget that is headed to the County Assembly for consideration.

“The additional funds will be disbursed in May,” said Governor Kimani Wamatangi (above).

Speaking while issuing bursary allocations forms at the county headquarters, Wamatangi said in the next financial year starting in July, and before the year 2023 ends, he will allocate another Sh100 million for bursaries, bringing the total amount awarded for the 2023 academic year to Sh300 million.

“This academic year, my administration will disburse Sh300 million in bursary allocations to needy students and my intention is to double the amount by next year to Sh600 million annually,” he stated.

“I have also initiated talks with international partners to attract more funding for education empowerment with a view to mobilise funds to sponsor needy students in Kiambu,” he said.

Needy cases

He was accompanied by his deputy Rosemary Kirika, Education County Executive Committee Member Bibbiane Waiganjo, and MCAs, led by Deputy Speaker John Njiru and Majority Leader Geoffrey Mucheke (Kalimoni).

Meanwhile, Kahawa Sukari MCA Kennedy Odhiambo, while distributing county bursary forms, said there were hundreds of needy cases in the ward despite the notion that the area is inhabited by tycoons

“I have given out 400 forms which he said were hardly enough for the beneficiaries.  All the dwellers here are not well off as it is believed,” said Odhiambo.
