Police in Kirinyaga County have arrested six people in connection with the chaos witnessed at a rally hosted by Azimio la Umoja - One Kenya Coalition party presidential running mate Martha Karua last week.

The suspects are said to have heckled and stoned Karua's motorcade in Kagumo and Kerugoya.

While confirming the arrests on Monday, Kirinyaga Central deputy County commissioner Daniel Ndege said some of the suspects have been arraigned in court.

Police believe the suspects were among a group of goons paid by rival politicians to disrupt Karua's homecoming rallies in the region last Tuesday.

"The other day there were some people who tried to disrupt law and order. When one of the leaders was coming home, there were some people who were hired by some leaders to hurl stones and shout down the leader," he said.

"As we are talking, there are six boys who have been arrested and arraigned in court for disrupting peace and causing hooliganism."

Kirinyaga County Assembly Majority Leader and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) senate aspirant James Kamau Murango and the party's Kirinyaga Central coordinator Bosco Gichangi were accused of being the masterminds of the fracas.

The two leaders were summoned to help authorities with investigations into the incident last week.

"Kirinyaga is a peaceful country and our people are civilised and hospitable. We cannot allow a handful of hooligans to cause chaos here and taint the good reputation of our county," the PS said.

"Insults and sponsoring chaos are retrogressive and primitive practices and Kirinyaga is beyond that. We must oppose leaders corrupting the minds of our young people using cheap liquor and bhang as a means to political glory."

Karua was unveiled as ODM leader Raila Odinga's running mate on May 16, as part of Azimio's strategy to woo voters from the vote-rich Mount Kenya region.
