Solomon Bundi, the former Abothiguchi ward representative, has been elected Speaker of the Meru County Assembly.

Bundi, who served in the previous assembly as minority leader, was declared the winner in the second round of voting after garnering 35 votes, beating his main rival Rodgers Kipembe Aburi who got 34 votes.

Bundi had also defeated the flashy son of Tigania East MP Mpuru Aburi with one vote in the first round, garnering 23 votes against the latter's 22.

Kipembe is popular in Meru for his luxurious lifestyle that includes fleets of high-end cars.

Other contenders, Dominiciano Maranya got 20 votes while Mugambi Laichena attained 4 votes in the first round of voting.

The assembly has 45 elected MCAs and 24 nominated members.

Bundi promises to Unite Meru MCAs

In his acceptance speech, Bundi promised to unite the assembly for better service delivery to Meru residents.

He assured members that he will also work closely with County Governor Kawira Mwangaza, Senator Kathuri Murungi and President William Ruto to ensure the residents enjoy fruits of devolution.

Mwangaza congratulated the elected speaker lauding the MCAs for a fair and transparent election exercise.

"Despite intimidation and political influence Mama is happy our MCAs have stood the test. I am looking forward to working with the new speaker and members for effective service delivery to the people of Meru," she stated.
