Acting city governor reshuffles Cabinet

Acting Nairobi Governor Benson Mutura yesterday stamped his authority as the county supremo by re-organising his Cabinet.

The changes saw Janet Ouko reinstated as the County Executive Committee member in charge of Education.

Ouko resigned from the Education docket in January 2019 during then-Governor Mike Sonko’s tenure, saying she was going to pursue other interests.

Addressing the press yesterday, Mutura also announced the transfer of Lucia Mulwa from Education to Agriculture docket.

“In line with the powers bestowed upon me by the Constitution and the County Governments Act, 2012, and in order to support the efficient exercise of the county functions, I have today made the following appointments and realignments for effective service delivery,” said Mutura.

Other realignments include the appointment of Jairus Musumba as the acting County Secretary and Paul Mutungi as the Chief of Staff.

Activist Brian Weke has been picked to be the legal advisor for the governor’s office.

Justus Kathenge who was the acting County Secretary now becomes the county’s chief officer for Urban Planning.

The Trade department, however, remains with no substantive minister. Instead, the CEC for Finance, Allan Igambi will continue holding the position in an acting capacity. 

Others who have retained their positions include Lands CEC Charles Kerich, Health Services Hitan Majevdia, his Transport counterpart Mohammed Dagane and the ICT and e-government’s Newton Munene. 

Also retained are Devolution CEC Vesca Kangogo and Environment CEC Larry Wambua.

Mutura was sworn in an acting capacity on December 21, 2020 following Sonko’s impeachment by the Senate.

On Monday, Sonko got a got temporary reprieve after the court barred the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission from conducting the by-elections.

Justice Antony Mrima temporarily suspended the special Gazette Notice calling for the by-election.
