Activist Boniface Mwangi threatens to sue DP Ruto over UDA party colours
Activist Boniface Mwangi has threatened to sue Deputy President William Ruto on allegations that his party is using similar colours to his Ukweli Party.
Speaking to K24 Digital, Mwangi who contested for the Starehe Parliamentary seat but lost to Charles Njagua accused the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party of using colours linked to the Ukweli party.
Ukweli party is known for its yellow and green colours while UDA which is linked to DP Ruto is known for the same colours in addition to the colour black.
“DP Ruto had the chance of picking any other colour but decided to brand himself using colours associated with Ukweli Party brand book,” said Mwangi.
According to Mwangi the Registrar of Political Parties owes the Ukweli Party legal explanation and that he had no option but to move to court.
Currently, plans are underway to write to the office of the Registrar for Political Parties seeking the matter to be addressed once and for all.
UDA Director of Communication Wanjohi Githae on Wednesday afternoon dismissed the move saying there was no monopoly of colours.
“There is no monopoly on colours. And in any case, the right place to make those claims is at Office of Registrar of Political Parties,” he said.
UDA party which has one Member of Parliament came to the limelight in March 2021 when through a gazette notice announced that it had changed its top leadership.
In the notice, Secretary-General Mohamed Sahal was replaced by Veronica Nduati.
On the other end, Ukweli Party is led by Mwangi and Schaeffer Okore.
The office of the Registrar of Political Parties has always invited objections from any person, a group or political party concerning the registration, the name, symbol, colour of any political party.
When one has an objection, they usually write to the office seeking an audience with officials in order to get away to address the matter.
Kenya has over 70 registered political parties which include Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) led by Raila Odinga, Jubilee led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Amani National Congress (ANC) led by Musalia Mudavadi, Ford Kenya Party led by Moses Wetangula, Wiper led by Kalonzo Musyoka, KANU led by Gideon Moi amongst other parties.
