Civil society organisations in Homa Bay yesterday asked the county government to prioritise rights of persons with disabilities in distributing employment opportunities.

Under their umbrella Homa Bay bunge la wenye nchi, the activists led by Walter Opiyo, Evans Oloo and Michael Kojo claimed that complaints have been raised by disabled persons in the county over what they termed as discrimination by the administration in hiring people for employment.

The lobby groups claimed that discrimination against the persons with disabilities began during nominations of MCAs at the Homa Bay County Assembly where they alleged that two MCAs were nominated to represent their interest yet they are not disabled. Oloo said they intend to file a petition in court to challenge the nomination of the two MCAs.  He observed that nomination of the two MCAs contravened rights of persons with disabilities. “It has emerged that two MCAs were nominated to county assembly to represent persons with disabilities yet they don’t deserve the positions. We will go to court to have their nomination revoked because it violated the rights of persons with disabilities,” Oloo said.
