Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi has stepped in to curb truancy and absenteeism among students in Kwanza schools.

The MP blamed parents for the increased cases of truancy claiming that parents were using learners to run their own errands.

Wanyonyi noted some of the students work as casual labourers on farms while some are left to take care of their siblings while their parents travel, attend parties or funerals.

“The rise in cases of absenteeism is greatly derailing education standards in this sub county. Parents are majorly responsible for this mess,” Wanyonyi said.

The MP was speaking at Misanga High School on Thursday, May 27 while issuing a Ksh6 million Cheque for a tuition block's construction.

The legislator has now called on school heads in affected schools in the region to organise a special parents meetings which he will attend in an attempt to correct the vice before it gets out of hand.

“I want to attend this parents meeting for all affected schools. Parents must be ready to give their children an enabling environment to effectively study instead of turning them into laborers,” he said.

Child labour is rampant in Kwanza Sub County where students from impoverished families are forced to work on large scale farms in order to supplement their parents income.

The MP also challenged contractors who have won tenders to put up infrastructural development in the constituency to ensure their workmanship is above board in line with required standards.

“We want quality work so that there is value for money since these projects are funded by the taxpayers. We will lias with relevant government authorities to deal with rogue contactors,” Wanyonyi said.
