An autopsy conducted on the body of a 19-year-old form three student who was allegedly assaulted by Kenya Forest Service rangers in Baringo County last week revealed his final moments.

The post-mortem conducted by government pathologist Benson Machari (pictured) based at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret indicated that Stephen Mwangi died of soft tissue injuries caused by a blunt object.

Macharia said the slain student sustained multiple soft tissue injuries on his lower and upper limbs and also the back of his body adding the deceased suffered a lot of bleeding.

“After conducting a post-mortem on the body of Stephen Mwangi, I formed the opinion that he died of excessive soft tissue injuries caused by blunt object,” revealed Macharia.

He further revealed that towards his death, the student suffered complications of soft tissue within the lungs in what he termed medically respiratory distress syndrome.

The pathologist was speaking to the media after conducting an autopsy on the deceased’s body at MTRH morgue in Uasin Gishu County.

He was accompanied by the slain student’s family members led by his mother Mary Wambui.

The student succumbed to the injuries last Monday night while receiving treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit where he had been rushed after the alleged assault incident.

Mwangi’s untimely death came following an alleged encounter with the KFS ranger when he reportedly tried to stop them from harassing his mother in Koibatek forest on May 8.

Police officers attached to the directorate of criminal investigations department in Baringo have since arrested five KFS rangers accused of allegedly assaulting the slain student.

They were arraigned before Eldama Ravine Senior Resident Magistrate Richard Koech who directed that they be held in police custody until today where a ruling will be issued on whether the officers accused of allegedly assaulting the slain student will remain in custody.

This follows an application by the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to have the rangers remain in custody for 14 days to complete investigations.
