Former Kinango Member of Parliament Benjamin Tayari has been appointed chairperson of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).

In a gazette notice, Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen appointed Tayari to serve at the helm of the state corporation for a period of three years with effect from January 13, 2023.

The CS also revoked the appointment of Joseph Kibwana who has held the position since June 2018.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 4 (a) of the Kenya Ports Authority Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport appoints — Benjamin Dalu Tayari to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Ports Authority, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 13th January 2023," the gazette notice dated January 13 reads in part.

Tayari lost his parliamentary seat to Gonzi Rai of the Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) party in the August 2022 general election.

The MP contested for the seat on President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party after ditching Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) outfit in January 2021.

He defied the ODM party wave in the coast region to campaign for Ruto and the latest appointment is seen as a reward for his sacrifice.

Meanwhile, former Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) chairperson Sarah Serem has been appointed chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Post Office Savings Bank for a period of three years.

The Kenya Post Office Savings Bank, popularly known as Postbank, is a savings bank regulated by the Kenya Post Office Savings Bank Act Cap 493B. The institution falls under the Postal Corporation of Kenya.

Serem had declared intention to vie for the Uasin Gishu governor's seat in the last election but was dealt a blow after a humbling defeat in the UDA party primaries.

Jonathan Bii bagged the UDA ticket after getting 71,152 votes. He went on to win the August election and became the second governor of the county.

In the latest state appointments, the Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury Njuguna Ndung'u appointed five members to the board of the Kenya Revenue Authority to serve for a period of three years.

The five are Darshan Shah, Wilkister M. Simiyu, Dr Fancy C. Too, Michael Kamau Kamiru and Samir Ibrahim.

The CS said the appointments of Susan Mudhune, Mukesh Shah, Amb. Richard Opembe, Leonard Ithau and Charles Makori Omanga have been revoked.
