Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has retained the Ganda MCA seat with a landslide victory in the mini poll that saw one person gunned down early this week.

Reuben Katana of ODM was declared victorious by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) at around midnight on Thursday defeating Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa's favourite contestant Abdulrahman Omar (independent), who garnered 2,331 votes.
Katana beat Omar with a margin of 1,846 votes. Jubilee's Joseph Kiponda came third with 599 votes followed by David Mitsanze with 362 votes.

However, IEBC said only 7,506 out of 16,623 voters (45.15 per cent) turned up for the exercise.

The results were declared by IEBC Returning Officer Juma Musa before Katana and observers, among others. No politicians were allowed in the tallying centre at Takaye Primary School.
Earlier, Kilifi Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi and his aides were ejected from the venue for not having accreditation.

In his acceptance speech, Katana urged all his rivals to join him in pushing forward the ward's development agenda.
''I thank IEBC for conducting free and fair elections; the security team for ensuring that there was peace all over the ward,'' he said.

The MCA-elect urged residents to stop political divisions based on parties, tribe or religion so as to build the nation.
Jumwa, her supporters and the other candidates who lost never turned up for the results announcement at the tallying centre.
The Malindi MP, who was arrested after violence on Tuesday that led to the death of one person— an uncle of the winner— spent two nights in police cells.
She was released on an Sh1 million bond together with her alleged accomplice Geoffrey Okutto.

Magarini MP Michael Kingi and Owen Baya (Kilifi North), among other leaders, congratulated Katana on his win.

Baya said they would hold a procession in Malindi town on Friday to celebrate the victory.

Malindi's Ganda ward seat was declared vacant by a Mombasa High Court after Katana moved to court challenging the results of the 2017 poll.
