The daughter of a Cabinet Secretary and her friend are among the 32 joyriders who travelled to Oregon, the United States, at the expense of top athletes participating in the World Athletics Championships, the People Daily has exclusively established.

In a confidential conversation, sources revealed that Ministry of Sports officials altered the list presented by Athletics Kenya (AK) of 80 and added an extra 32.

“The daughter of the CS and a friend are part of the entourage. They travelled with some of the Team Kenya members last week,” said the source.

Neither Principal Secretary Joe Okudo nor AK officials have come out in the open to address the matter.

The revelations came even as the Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti asked the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to help his office to probe the Oregon fiasco where joyriders are said to be part of the entourage currently attending the World Athletics Championships in the US.

Speaking to People Daily yesterday, Kinoti said with the help of DPP, he expects the probe into the matter to be concluded in the next two weeks.

“We do not want this issue to turn out like the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) saga. Despite FKF officials being arrested, the DPP said he lacked sufficient enough evidence to proceed with the matter. We want this matter expedited with support of his office,” he said.

Bundled out

Kenyans were yesterday seething with rage following the anti-climax show by star sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala, who was bundled out of the 100 metres race after finishing fifth in the semi-finals.

Omanyala left late for the event due to visa delays which the US embassy blamed on late presentation of the list.

He arrived three hours to the start of his race but was fortunate to make it to the semis after finishing third in his heat. Last week, the embassy raised issues the ministry visa application.
