Cardinal Otunga Girls Secondary School in Bungoma was on Wednesday evening closed indefinitely after a student committed suicide in the dormitory.

The Form One student hanged herself with a bedsheet, reportedly after the deputy headteacher shamed her in front of other students for doctoring geography exam answer sheet.

The teacher accused the student of sneaking into the staff room and awarding herself 93 marks. One of the deceased’s classmates said she was paraded with five other girls who had committed various offences.

“She told us she would kill herself but no one took her seriously,” the student said.

School principal Imelda Oyombe said she would issue an official statement later as she had travelled to Nairobi on official duties.

“I have received the sad information while on official duty here in Nairobi but I am travelling back to school and will give an official statement from there,” she said.

Bungoma OCPD Nelson Nanga would not comment on the matter but confirmed that several people, including six teachers, had recorded statements.

“We will give the official version later as per now we are still recording statements among the people who had the last contact with her,” he said.
