President William Ruto has appointed former Police Spokesperson Charles Owino as the new chairperson of the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC).

Owino replaces former TV star Kathleen Openda whose appointment to the position has been revoked.

"I William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Charles Owino Wahong'o to be the Chairperson of the Council to the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication, with effect from the 29th September 2023 up to the 5th October, 2024. The appointment of Kathleen Openda is revoked" Ruto said in a Gazette notice dated September 27, 2023.

This comes two months after Owino was appointed as the new United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party Siaya County Coordinator.

Owino became the Police Spokesperson in January 2018, taking over from George Kinoti who was appointed as the Director of Criminal Investigations.

Towards the 2022 General Elections, Owino expressed intent to become the next Siaya Governor but was unsuccessful.
