Phanice Chemutai hit headlines on Friday July 8 after she was alledgdly shot by Kitale based businessman Ken Muyundo in Kiminini town.

Muyundo told police officers he mistaken Chemutai for Caroline Kangogo who is being sought for killing two men.

Chemutai was lucky to survive the gun wound after being rescued by police officers who were on patrol that night.

Chemutai has since spoken from her hospital bed at Kitale Referral Hospital saying she had never met with the businessman whom she claimed made sexual advances before shooting her.

“I arrived at Kiminini market from my Kaptama home to help my sister get a birth certificate. I also wanted to look for a college I could join because I am a Form Four leaver. On reaching Kiminini town, I was caught up by curfew time forcing me to get a place to sleep,” Chemutai narrated.

Chemutai said she rented a room for Ksh300 intending to spend the night there with her sister and on clearing the payment she saw Muyundo’s car.

“He asked me to join him in the car because he wanted to have a brief talk with me. He then gave the caretaker a one thousand shillings note saying it was airtime and asked him to excuse us a bit,” Chemutai said.

Chemutai parents have spoken and asked government to help them expedite investigations and take action against the suspect.

Muyundo has since been arraigned before Kitale court where he pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and unlawfully injuring Chemtai.

He was released on Ksh200, 000 cash bail after his lawyers led by Cliff Ombeta pleaded with court to free him because he was under medication.

The  Chief Magistrate Julius Ng’arng’ar set July 28 as the hearing date.
