Christian Eriksen collapses during Denmark Euro 2020 clash with Finland, match called off
Medics rushed to aid Christian Eriksen after the Denmark midfielder collapsed to the ground during the European Championship match with Finland. There were distressing scenes inside the ground in Copenhagen, as the Danish players stood by the side of their attacking midfielder
Eriksen, who left Tottenham in January 2020, appeared to collapse to the ground away from the ball.
The players then brought his condition to the attention of doctors and the referee, who rushed to the scene to his assistance.
Kasper Schmeichel and Andreas Christensen were among those to support Eriksen and it was immediately clear that this was the state of a serious emergency.
Doctors then began to carry out CPR in a bid to resuscitate the 29-year-old.
The Denmark players turned away in horror while remaining by Eriksen's side.
The TV cameras then panned away from the scene as Danish fans were pictured in understandable distress.
Eriksen's wife Sabrina then came down onto the touchline and was consoled by Simon Kjaer and Schmeichel.
Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand walked across to the other side of the field where Eriksen was being treated before returning to speak with Finland manager Markku Kanerva.
The Finland players then let the field as referee Anthony Taylor also guided the officials off the pitch.
The BBC studio was left speechless as Gary Lineker, Cesc Fabregas, Alex Scott and Micah Richards sent their well wishes to Eriksen.
Fabregas said: “I don’t even know what to say really.
“My body is shaking. All I can think about is Christian’s family and what they must be going through.
“It’s a very very sad moment and I pray for the very best."
An emotional Scott added that she'd sent a text to her mother to tell her she loved her.
“I can’t believe what we’re witnessing. I think football totally goes out of the window right now," she said.
“You’re thinking about his family, all the rest of the players out there witnessing it as well.
“I actually just got on my phone and messaged my mum and told her I love her.
“I think it’s a reminder of how quickly life can change, just like that.”
The programme was then called to a halt.
That Group B opener was later suspended, as the world of football united in support of Eriksen.
Social media was flooded with messages for Eriksen, accompanied with the Danish flag and love heart emojis.
