Business at City Hall came to a standstill yesterday after Speaker Beatrice Elachi resigned in a huff over alleged threats over her life.

The building, which serves thousands of Kenyans on a daily basis, was a no-go zone as law enforcers engaged in dramas as county workers were barred from accessing their work stations.

Not even the City Law Courts were left behind as armed officers barred agitated Kenyans from accessing justice.

“To our esteemed clients who were meant to attend court today, kindly due to the political melee anticipated at the county Assembly, our services will not be forthcoming with ease today.

Kindly return on August 17, for new dates,” a notice at the entrance read.

County Staff who spoke to People Daily expressed disappointments with ongoing leadership wrangles.

Opportunity to serve

“We are tired of these shenanigans. We are appealing  to President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and help us,’ said Wahome Nyaga, a staff working at the Licensing Department.

Another staff,  Rachel Nyabuto from the Inspectorate Department, also urged the national government to help end the ongoing stalemate.

“We are a city which should set a good example, but the recent drama being witnessed in the city has placed us in a bad position. We should not have a capital city like this,” she said.

A section of Kenyans who expected to be served were equally disappointed. “I wanted to renew my business permit but I will be forced to wait until tomorrow now,” Isaac Mwilwa said.

Elachi announced her resignation on Tuesday morning, handing over to her deputy, John Kamangu.

“It has been tough. I can’t hold any longer,” Elachi said, “I, therefore, tender my resignation and thank President Uhuru Kenyatta for giving me this opportunity to serve under his Jubilee administration.”
