A Grade Three pupil of Bulanda Primary School caused a major upset to win the Busia Junior Women’s Cross Country Championships at Busia County Stadium at the weekend, thanks to the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

Selpha Mungala, 11, led from the start to open a 400m gap in the 15 lap 6km race to win in 24 minutes, 39.24 seconds.

She was followed in second place by East African Secondary Schools championships runners-up Silva Kadogo in 25:43.65; Mungala’s schoolmate Minitricia was third in 27: 32.53.

“Daily training and hard work made me emerge winner against experienced runners; I am determined to keep the fire burning and stamp a mark nationally before  emulating Eliud Kipchoge to conquer the  world,” Selpha said.

Her class teacher Madam Jane Khaira said Selpha was not good in some subjects, a feat that saw her repeat Standard One twice before developing interest in athletics, adding that if it were not for CBC Selpha would have dropped out of school.

In the 6km men’s category St John’s Alupe Secondary School  Form One student  Bernard Otare emerged winner  in a time of 20:24.23; he was followed  in second place  by  Osopotoit Primary  School pupil  Edgar Omanyala  in 21: 43.72 while  Douglas  Barasa  came third in 21: 56.87.

The 10km senior men title went to Busia businessman Emmanuel Owino who crossed the line in a time of 34:29.72 ahead of former St John’s Mabale Secondary student Wilson “Bahati” Wamai in 35: 29.05.
