Concern in Trans Nzoia schools after MP threatens to impeach CS Magoha
Kwanza constituency Member of Parliament Ferdinand Wanyonyi, has threatened to begin the impeachment process of Ministry of Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha.
Speaking to journalists while handing over a cheque worth Ksh6 million shillings to St. Augustine Maziwa Board of Management on Saturday, July 31, Wanyonyi claimed that CS Magoha is steering the Ministry of Education in the wrong direction.
"Magoha has been giving misplaced directives that we shall have to deal with for the sake of our children's future," Wanyonyi said.
The second term lawmaker faulted the ministry and the government's 100% transition saying it is not realistic in Kenyan education system.
"I'm greatly opposed to the American system of 100% transition, it is affecting our academic standards, Magoha, if you are listening to me that is wrong," Wanyonyi added.
Wanyonyi said the 100% transition has led to congestion of students in classrooms, exposing them to the COVID-19 virus.
"I am told that St. Monicah Girls which has a capacity of less than 200 students is required to admit 622 students, a number that is equivalent to 8 new classes, where do I get these classrooms?" he asked.
Trans Nzoia Parents Association chairperson Wellington Waliaula said majority of schools do not have adequate infrastructure to accommodate students.
"As we speak, the classrooms and desks are inadequate in many schools, the government has only provided books. Where will those books be kept?" Waliaula asked.
Waliaula called on the ministry of education to investigate schools heads who are charging extra levies, against the recently issued ministry of education 2021 school fees guidelines.
"We have received complaints that some principals are demanding for extra fees in the name of motivation or remedial fees, such principals should be brought to book," he said.
Speaking at the same event, Bidii ward Member of County Assembly Peter Waswa lectured teachers for posting unimpressive performance in last year's KCSE examinations.
Appearing agitated, Waswa asked teachers to up their game in this year's national examinations.
"As an education stakeholder in this area, I'm not happy with your performance, sending three students to universities is not satisfactory please make us proud," Waswa said.
