Cop, KU student charged with stealing alcohol worth Sh3m

A female police officer based at Thika Police Station and Kenyatta University architectural student were on Tuesday charged with three counts of breaking into a building and committing a felony, destroying evidence and conveying stolen property.

Anastasia Wanjiru Muchungu and Ben Kamau Kamande were charged that on diverse dates between November 15, 2019 and January 4, 2020 at African Spirit Limited in Thika West Sub County within Kiambu County, jointly with others not before court, broke and entered the factory and committed therein a felony namely theft of assorted brands of wines and spirits valued at Sh3 million.

The two, who appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Oscar Wanyanga, were also accused of knowingly removing assorted brands of wines and spirits required as evidence at Milimani Law Courts with intent to prevent being used as evidence.

Wairimu and Kamau were also charged with conveying eleven cartons of spirits branded Furaha finest vodka each containing thirty bottles of two 250 milliliter using a motor vehicle Toyota Premio registration number KBP770D Toyota Premio suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.

The two pleaded not guilty and their bail application will be ruled in the afternoon.

They were arraigned months after an AP officer died at the factory owned by billionaire Humphrey Kariuki.

The officer who died in September last year is said to have been manning the factory when he slipped and died.

He suffered serious injuries after sliding from a spiral metal staircase within the factory and was pronounced dead at Thika Level Five hospital where he had been rushed.
