Uasin Gishu County ejects more than 50 families from public land
More than 50 families were rendered homeless after their houses were flattened following an eviction order by Uasin Gishu County government.
The residents of Kamkunji estate in the outskirts of Eldoret town woke up to the rude shock of demolitions that began at 4.30am as two bulldozers and a battery of county enforcement officers pulled down the structures.
Tenants watched helplessly as the bulldozers tore down their houses with no time to salvage anything.
The plot owners and tenants were left counting losses worth millions of shillings in an exercise that lasted for two hours.
This happened after Governor Jackson Mandago toured the estate two days ago where he issued a stern warning to the tenants to vacate, saying the houses were illegally constructed on the county land.
Joseph Kipkoech, one of those affected said he acquired the property through the right channels.
He claimed there was a scheme to displace them from land they acquired legally three decades ago to pave way for well connected individuals.
Juma Yasin claimed they were not given enough notice of the demolition, adding that they have lived in the area for more than 10 years without any issue.
