Human, wildlife conflict victims to benefit from State compensation funds

State department of wildlife Principal Secretary Professor Fred Segor Friday told Trans Nzoia residents that the government had finalized plans to compensate those whose relatives were killed by wild animals between 2014 to date through the human wildlife act of 2013.

According to the principal secretary, the government had set aside Sh5 million for loss of lives and Sh3 million for injuries caused while damage to property was still valued according the extent after valuation. 

He said relevant committees had been formed to assess and quantify compensation.

"We appeal to residents of Trans Nzoia county living near the Mount Elgon National Park to report cases of human wildlife conflict for possible compensation," he said. 

He said national parks and forests were strictly a no go zone and added that any trespass would be treated as a criminal act. 

Meanwhile, Trans Nzoia county governor Patrick Khaemba hailed the government for launching the second phase of the national hygiene programme for creating money circulation among the residents.

He asked the government to consider increasing slots for youths in the already overcrowded slums in the county in cushioning those affected by the challenges posed by coronavirus. 

"There  is a general outcry among the locals towards enabling them get a better livelihoods.  Our appeal to the President is to have a program of having more youth recruited," he said.
