Landslide sweeps away tea bushes in Murang’a

Farmers in upper Githambo in Kiharu have been left counting losses after a landslide swept away tea bushes Tuesday morning.

About 2000 tea bushes were carried to a nearby river and the land left bare but no casualties were reported.

County meteorological officer Paul Murage attributed the heavy rains to the destruction.

He said all the soils in the county have reached maximum moisture capacity for absorption and cannot hold any more water.

"Most of the areas have received rainfall over 1000 mm in the past one month and we are afraid if the rains continue, more damage is likely to occur," he said.

Murage said the upper and middle zones are at higher risk of getting landslides she to their steep topography.

"Those in the low lands should consider moving to higher ground to avoid being swept away by the floods," he added.
