Coffee farmers from Gathinja factory in Murang'a County have been left counting losses after coffee worth millions of shillings was stolen Monday night.

Approximately 150 bags of parchment coffee whose worth is estimated to be Sh6 million are said to have been removed from the factory's stores.

The farmers pointed an accusing finger at the factory management claiming this could have been an inside job as the coffee was ready for dispatch on Tuesday.

Rebecca Wanjiru, a farmer, said they were eagerly waiting for proceeds from the produce and theft is a major setback for them.

"We were hoping to get some cash to help us facilitate various need in our homes but it all seems to be lost," she said.

Wanjiru said it's not the first time  coffee is being stolen from the factory and no recovery has ever been made.

According to Francis Githinji, the chairman to the factory, he got a call from one of the managers informing him of the incident.

Gathinji said he immediately alerted the police who went to the factory but the thieves were nowhere to be found.

"We tried searching all various routes to see if we can get leads on where the coffee would have been  taken to no avail," he said.
