Court stops Obado from accessing property
Migori Governor Okoth Obado yesterday suffered a major blow after the High Court barred him from selling, charging, leasing or developing a property in Nairobi’s Loresho Ridge pending the hearing and determination of a case filed by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
The Anti-Corruption Judge Esther Maina also gave orders barring the governor from selling two top-of-the-range cars until the conclusion of the matter.
“Pending the hearing and determination of this matter, an order is hereby granted that the monthly rental income of Sh143,000 deprived of renting out of the Loresho Ridge house be deposited in the joint earning interest account in the name of the EACC and Obado,” Justice Maina ruled.
In the suit, the commission is seeking to recover the sum total of Sh73.5 million which the anti-graft body said was allegedly looted from the county coffers.
EACC filed an application under a certificate of urgency claiming Obado’s luxury cars and property were obtained from proceeds of graft.
The judge also issued orders stopping Obado and his four children, his proxy Jared Peter Odoyo Kwaga and their agents from selling or dealing in any way with the Loresho property pending a hearing of the case by the anti-graft agency.
The court further stated that the two V8 land Cruisers in possession of his two sons should be surrendered with the log books to EACC within seven days.
