CS urges women to play critical role in peace and security
Women are expected to play a key role towards the realisation of peace and security in the country following the launch of second-generation Kenya National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security 2020 – 2024.
The plan is the second phase of a process initiated in 2016 to implement the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325) which calls for women’s full and equal participation in all aspects of conflict prevention and resolution, peacekeeping, and peace-building.
The Public Service and Gender CS Margaret Kobia said the process had been a whole of government approach, involving commitment from all major ministries responsible for Kenya’s security
“More importantly, it underscores the importance of women’s equal and full participation as active agents in the peace and security processes,” she said.
The plan recognises the role of women and women-led community organisations in peace and security issues, building on their analysis, knowledge, and capacity to advance sustainable peace.
It specifically targets critical security priorities in Kenya including climate change, violent extremism, gender-based violence, forced migration and human trafficking, and humanitarian disasters.
“Women and girls’ participation and leadership in managing these issues is invaluable through their unique lived experiences and expertise, stemming from the varied roles they hold at community, county and national level,” Kobia said.
