Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has announced that day schools in areas with pending elections will remain closed on August 29, 2022.

Speaking during a press briefing, the CS noted that the said schools in eight areas where by-elections will be held will remain closed for a day.

“The children can stay at home on Monday 29, and report to school on Tuesday 30. For those mixed schools which are both Boarding and day, the Boarding scholars should remain in school and remain away from the polling areas,” he stated.

Magoha affirmed that the move will smoothen the electoral process for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) by providing it with polling stations to use.

While assuring parents that their children will be safe, Magoha additionally asked the commission to relocate tallying centres to tertiary institutions within the region to pave way for students sitting their national exams.

“We really must now support our children as we work through a very tight schedule. May I very kindly urge the teachers in the schools to be available, especially those in boarding schools, where the children may be required to be regimented a little more than usual so that they are assisted to galvanize the day,” he stated.
