Deaths inch closer to 400-mark after five more succumb

Coranavirus-related deaths inched closer to the 400-mark after five people succumbed to the virus bringing the death toll to 369.

Additionally, Kenya also reported another 690 new coronavirus disease infections, bringing the national tally to 22,053.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said yesterday the number of fatalities has been on the rise, with another 5 succumbing to Covid-19 bringing the total to 369.

“From 5,393 samples tested in the last 24 hours, 690 people have tested positive.

This brings the number of positive cases to 22,053 and number of cumulative tests to 315,723,” said the CS in a statement on the status of coronavirus in the country.

From the cases, 681 were Kenyans while nine were foreigners, with the youngest case being six months and oldest aged 83.

It was also a day that saw 58 patients recovering from he disease, all from the various hospitals, bringing the total number of recoveries to 8,477.

By distribution, Nairobi had the highest caseload of 535 followed by Kiambu and Kajiado with 56 and 28 respectively.

Nyeri had 24 cases, Busia recorded nine, Machakos seven, Kisumu and Nakuru with six cases each, Embu and Garissa had four cases each, Laikipia and Narok with three each, Bungoma, Kwale, Meru, Mombasa and Nyandarua with one case each.

A majority of the sub-counties in Nairobi recorded over 20 new cases in the last 24 hours.

The highest cases in Nairobi were reported in Westlands with 63 followed by Lang’ata with 44 while Dagoretti North and Dagoretti South had 43 cases each while Ruaraka had the lowest number with 19.

In Kiambu, the cases were spread in Ruiru, Gatundu South, Kikuyu, Limuru, Kiambu Town, Kiambaa, Juja, Kabete and Lari.

In Nakuru, the six cases were in Naivasha and Nakuru West while in Embu all the four cases were in Manyatta.

Already, the rapid surge in the number of coronavirus infections and deaths in the country has drawn the attention of World Health Organisation (WHO), which is now warning of widespread community transmissions if urgent measures are not taken.

In the letter, WHO singled out Kenyan politicians and senior government officials for brazenly flouting Health ministry Covid-19 protocols.
