Deputy President William Ruto has asked Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to take responsibility for the escape of three terror convicts from Kamiti prison saying he was sleeping on the job.

The DP accused Matiang’i of abandoning his Cabinet responsibilities to play politics.

Ruto, who was speaking when he made stopovers in Embu County, described the escape of the convicts, who were re-captured yesterday, as a national shame.

“I want to ask those concerned with security matters to address themselves on the matter instead of playing politics.

They should take full responsibility because security of the nation is more important than any other assignment,” said the Deputy President.

“When we hear that terrorists have escaped from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison, that is a shame to the country and those tasked with security should take responsibility,” he said.

He described Matiang’i and Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho as “political youth wingers”.

“Even if they have chosen to be youth wingers for some politicians, they should understand that the responsibilities they have been given of ensuring that every Kenyan is secure and criminals are behind bars is a higher calling and responsibility,” the DP said.

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro said the sacking of the Kenya Prisons Service Commissioner-General Wycliffe Ogallo was not the solution.

“The the escape of suspects from Kamiti prison in a clear indication of how the security department is rotten.

The people who were given the job went to politics. We want to hear the big fish in security docket are out,” said Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua.

Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa accused top security chiefs of laxity.

“When we have a security minister and PS going to politics who will give us security?” posed Jumwa.
