Detectives arrest corporal in Sh15m robbery probe
A police officer attached to Ruiru police station allegedly laid an ambush for almost four hours at a building in Parklands before robbing an employee of Sh15 million on Monday evening.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Parklands yesterday tracked down and arrested Corporal George Onyango Mtere, who is currently on annual leave, at his rural village in Ndori, Bondo Sub-County.
Investigations revealed that immediately after the alleged robbery, the officer travelled to his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County the same night.
Ms Davshah Patel, an accountant with Mitsumi Business Centre was on Monday evening, allegedly accosted by Mtere and another suspect, both armed with pistols, as they left the lift at their offices along Muthithi Road.
Well-planned plot
She was going to deposit the cash at the bank after work, according to the police.
An investigation by the DCI Parklands revealed a well-planned plot that involved the building’s staff and the robbers.
On Tuesday detectives launched and reviewed the CCTV footage and managed to identify three suspects.
They were later identified as Albert Oketch Ochola who is the plumber at the building, Wycliffe Marani who is the electrician and Walter Kiverenge Indimali who is the caretaker and supervisor at the building.
The suspects were grilled and they allegedly led the officers to their homes where they made recoveries.
At Oketch’s residence in Huruma estate the sleuths allegedly recovered $10,000 (Sh1.1 million) and a speaker.
They then proceeded to Kiverenge’s house in Kangemi where $12,300 (Sh13.5 million) which had been concealed inside an electric tester was allegedly recovered.
In Kawangware Congo area, at the residence of Marani, police reportedly recovered $11,000 (Sh1.2 million)
Parklands DCI boss David Chebii said following further investigations, detectives arrested Benard Ogutu Okech in Mathare and recovered another $1,000 (Sh1.1 million), and brand new Sony Bravia TV 42 inches and two mobile phones.
Upon interrogation, Ogutu allegedly revealed that one of the firearms used in the Monday robbery belonged to Constable Onyango.
“The suspect led officers to Ndori village Bondo Sub-County where Corporal Onyango was arrested and a search was carried out but nothing was recovered,” Chebii said.
Chebii said the probe is ongoing to recover the firearms in question and track down other suspects who are at large.
The officer and his accomplice, while in communication with other suspects, are said to have remained at the building for about three hours and 40 minutes as they waited for the right time to hit.
