A director of Lariak Properties Ltd, a company claiming ownership of a house that was demolished in Westlands, Nairobi, was yesterday charged with robbery with violence.

Nathaniel Kipkemboi Barmasai, who was arrested on Sunday in Eldoret, is accused of stealing electronic appliances, jewelries and assorted household goods all valued at Sh18 million.

According to the charge sheet, Barmasai stole the items, the properties of Niraj Batuk Shah and Avani Niraj Shah in their house jointly with others not before court and threatened to use violence on them.

He appeared before Chief Magistrate Wendy Micheni and denied the charge.

The court released him on a Sh3 million bond or a cash bail of Sh2 million. The case will be mentioned on November 28.

The Sh80 million property was demolished by a mob allegedly deployed by the private developer.

The couple claimed they are the legal occupants since their lease of the property, which was allegedly bought by a private company in 2010 expires in 2048.

They said the investor in question demolished the house without following police protocol.

Auctioneer Zachary Baraza was arrested and arraigned in court over the demolitions after the couple claimed they were violently evicted from their home.
