Kenyans have been encouraged to embrace sustainable farming practices to ensure food security and at the same time build resilience against climate change shocks.

Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology (RVIST) principal Sammy Chemoiwa said whereas the government has put in place policies and budget, farmers’ implementation of the practice is key.

According to Chemoiwa, more investment is needed to lift millions of rural poor out of poverty and make agriculture environmentally sustainable as one way to end famine in the country.

“Climate change has been a challenge in our country and we need to have sustainable agriculture to tackle food security in most parts of the country,” said Chemoiwa.

Speaking during the 13th RVIST Agribusiness Expo at the institution, Chemoiwa said the annual event gives room for students to learn more about agriculture and an opportunity to embrace the same.

He revealed that land decimated by pesticides, non-sustainable agricultural techniques, and water waste, hunger and undernutrition will be on the rise.
