Deputy President William Ruto on Tuesday said his 'Hustler Nation' will back Yusuf Haji's son Abdul Haji as senator in the upcoming Garissa by-election.

The DP announced the endorsement after meeting Garissa Members of County Assembly(MCAs) at his Karen office in Nairobi.

The Garissa seat fell vacant following the death of Senator Mohamed Yusuf Haji on February 15.

Mr Yusuf Haji who was also the chairperson of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) task force died at the Aga Khan Hospital receiving treatment.

Yusuf Haji's son Abdul Haji is among the candidates attracted by the seat. Garissa Township Member of Parliament(MP) Aden Duale last week said elders and professionals in Garissa had resolved to back Abdul Haji.

According to Duale, Ruto's affiliated party the United Democratic Alliance(UDA) backed from election out of "respect and honour for Yusuf Haji".

Garissa's is among the by-elections where DP Ruto's UDA party will not field a candidate. The party also backed from Juja constituency by-election leaving the Jubilee party and Moses Kuria's the People's Empowerment Party(PEP).

The Juja seat fell vacant after the death of Member of Parliament(MP) Francis Munyua Waititu alias Wakapee.
