Drama at Nyandarua County Assembly as Speaker is denied entry to office
Chaos and turmoil was witnessed at the Nyandarua County Assembly when Speaker Ndegwa Wahome tried to access his office.
Police and locals engaged in running battles as Speaker Wahome's supporters forced their way to the Assembly's premises.
The Speaker had just been reinstated by he High Court following a third unsuccessful try by Nyandarua MCAs to impeach him.
Police manning the gate blocked Wahome from accessing the County Assembly premises as the altercation between the Speaker and police attracted hundreds of locals.
An angry mob among the people broke the gate to have Wahome go in. Overwhelmed police lobbed several tear gas canisters to disperse the group.
Five MCAs allied to Wahome were also denied access to the chambers. Among them was Gatimu ward MCA Kieru Wambui who was to table an impeachment motion against Governor Kimemia.
The Governor is coming under intense pressure from his opponents since last week when Jubilee lost the Rurii ward by-election where he was the lead campaigner for the ruling party. He is being accused of corruption and abuse of office.
Wahome maintained that he was the substantive speaker of the assembly.
"I want the whole world to know that this is a County that is being run by goons. How do they not even respect court orders? The court ruled that I resume office and it is in public knowledge" he said.
Wahome regretted that the police were being used by the County Commissioner who is being used by the Governor to frustrate him.
He termed the use of police as “corruption fighting back”.
"This matter is being perpetrated by the Governor. We now urge the President to intervene" he noted.
But speaking later in a press conference, MCAs allied to Governor Kimemia, led by the leader of majority Wambugu Kong’ori, vowed not to allow Wahome back.
"We cannot be ruled by court orders and yet he does not have the numbers. Politics is about numbers" King’ori said.
He noted the assembly duties were going on as usual.
"We are moving on swiftly but he wants to interfere with our business using goons. We cannot run this assembly this way," the leader of majority protested.
Wahome has vowed to camp at the assembly until he was allowed in
