Police officers in Mombasa County have called off the UDA party political meeting convened by Former Machakos senator Johnston Muthama in Nyali Mombasa citing violation of Covid-19 protocols.

The meeting, which had brought together UDA party aspirants from the Coast, ended prematurely after police hurled teargas canisters to disperse them.

Muthama, the party chairman, was forced to cut short his speech and drive off from the hotel to avoid police arrest

The meeting had been scheduled at Terrace Villa Resort, located in Nyali.

"It was a private meeting, they were not many. The number was within the required threshold. We did not intend to take long but we are disappointed that disrupted the meeting," Muthama told journalists.

The former Machakos Senator expressed his disappointment over the use of force saying the attendants had observed social distance.

"This is victimisation to the UDA party because of its association to deputy president William Ruto, there are some people who fear this party is going to form the next government," Muthama said.

He, however, stated that the party will continue to agitate for the economic rights of the common people through its bottom up approach.

In the attendance was Veronica Maina, the party secretary general.

Nyali police boss Daniel Mumasaba said the owner of the hotel that played host will be arrested for violating covid-19 rules on political gatherings.

"All political gatherings are banned that is why we have decided to throw them out, they had not informed us,no notification to the police at all,"said Mumasaba.
