Driver shot by al Shabaab in Lamu buried at Limuru home

 A-38-year old lorry driver who was shot dead by suspected al Shabaab militants in Lamu on New Year’s eve was laid to rest at his home in Ngarariga village in Limuru sub-county on Saturday.

David Kungu Karanja was shot together with loader as they were heading to Nairobi from Lamu market where they had delivered foodstuff.

It was reported that they were ordered to stop by the heavily armed militants who were wearing clothes that resembled those of the Kenya Defence Forces who patrol the forest.

Mourners were told the attackers tied them with a rope before shooting them. Lamu-based businessman Josphat Mukono said Kungu was a kind and hard-working man who related well with other traders.                                                                                        

Mukono said when the KDF heard the shootings, they went to check what was happening but the attackers disappeared into the forest.

He told the mourners he and other friends rushed to the mortuary where they identified their bodies.

“We identified them. They had been badly shot. They did not steal anything from them,” Mukono said.

PCEA Ngarariga Parish moderator Rev Leonard Njoroge who led the service urged Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and Limuru MP John Kiragu to ensure the children left behind by the deceased get bursary funds.

He is survived by a widow and three children.
