Drug, wildlife trafficking suspect arrested in Mombasa
A Kenyan who has been on the United States radar over his involvement in wildlife and drugs trafficking was arrested in Mombasa and airlifted to Nairobi.
Abdi Hussein Ahmed was arrested by detectives from Interpol in a joint operation with Kenyan authorities.
The detectives got wind of Ahmed’s daily movements and information about a hotel in Mwembe Tayari area that he frequented for breakfast.
According to a police report, the suspect was arrested in the hotel as he was being served breakfast.
His arrest comes two months after his accomplice Abdul Aziz Saleh was arrested in May Liboi, Garissa County. Ahmed (pictured) has a Sh1 million bounty on his head.
Saleh has since been extradited to the US to undergo trial.
Saleh had been arrested in 2019.
He, however, absconded court after he was released on bail pending the hearing and determination of drug trafficking offences. The court issued a warrant for his arrest.
Saleh and Ahmed were accused of transporting, distributing and smuggling 190kg of rhino horns and 10 tonnes of elephant ivory from different African countries.
