EACC apolitical, commissioner reiterates
The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) has said it is not a political tool and it’s not being used by the government to intimidate political leaders.
Mwaniki Gachoka a commissioner at the EACC said this is an independent body and it does not take orders from anyone on who to investigate.
Speaking in Murang’a, Gachoka said the commission conducts its own investigations to gather enough evidence on anyone who is suspected to have been involved in corruption after which they present the case in court.
He said most of the cases are raised through the complaints desk and the commission conducts preliminary investigations to see if the case is valid.
“In a year, we get close to 6,000 complaints but we drop nearly 50 percent of them at the initial stage due to lack of evidence” he said.
“At times we establish that the cases have been raised with malicious intentions and we also drop them” he added.
The commissioner said EACC will go after anyone who is involved in graft regardless of their status or political affiliation.
He urged the leaders to stop misleading the public as this might make the commission to lose its trust with the people.
EACC has been under attack from a section of leaders who claim that its being used by the government to intimidate them.
