Outstanding performances feted as 2024 Eastern Region Drama Festival ends

Drama enthusiasts were treated to exceptional performances at the Eastern Region Drama and Film Festival, hosted at Meru School and Kaaga Girls’ High School from March 13-17, 2024.

Under the theme “Unlocking opportunities for socio-economic transformation through drama and film,” the festival brought together students from Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Marsabit, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Embu, and Isiolo counties, showcasing captivating performances across 13 genres.

Mukuuni feted

In the play category, 'Player Number 10' from Mukuuni Boys won first place, with Moi Girls Marsabit claiming second place with their item titled 'Brokers Of Badaja'. Kangaru School finished third with their act 'It's Games Time', while St Mary’s Igoji ranked fourth with 'Web of Deception.'

Moi Girls’ Marsabit were crowned winners in the Cultural Creative Dance category with their performance 'Aroy Wanjabat'. Thitani Girls' 'Shimondiwee' and Kangaru Girls' 'Njamba Ya Bururi' took first and second runners-up respectively.

In the narrative category, 'The Byropen' from Ikuu Boys won first place, emphasizing the need for peace and unity through the fictional characters 'Imbolokonye' and 'Mbwika'. The narrative was performed by James Maingi who won the best narrator award and scripted by David Asimba.

Kasikeu Boys' 'The National Exam' and Materi Girls' 'Magdalena' secured first and second runners-up respectively.

In the Film Genre, Mutongoloni Girls will represent the region at the nationals with a Screen Verse while Nguuni Hill won in the Screen Choral.

Ndalani Girls took first position in Screen Choral, while Ndalani won in the Advert.

Kathiani Boys and Thitani Girls won in the Documentary and Short Film categories.

Nyangwa Primary took first place in the Primary Advert, while Kithetu Primary won the Screen Choral.

Kitengela International dominated the Primary School Film category after winning in Documentary, Short Film and Screen Dance.

Chuka Girls from Tharaka Nithi County won the choral verse category with their performance 'Pilau Njeri', while Mwaani Girls' 'Popo Mweusi' and Vulueni Secondary's 'Dabo Deka' were first and second runners-up respectively.

Kangaru School shine

Kangaru School's 'Victorious Thirst' took first place in the modern creative dance category, with Maliku Girls' 'FGM' and St. Angela emerging second and third.

St. Mary’s Igoji won the solo verse category with 'Choices Have Consequences', while Meru School's 'Ajusa Kipusa' and Tumaini International's 'Jozi La Chozi' were first and second runners-up.

Barazani Girls, Itumi Day Secondary School, Chelezo High, and Nyangwa Boys won in the spoken word, mime, solo dance, and comedy categories respectively.

In the French items, Muthale Girls' 'La Tente De La Passion' won best French play, while Kathiani Boys' 'Freres De Sang' won best French choral verse. Meru School's 'Une Vie Zigzaguante' won the French Solo category.

In the Junior School category, Kanyakine Boys Boarding Primary School took the best modern creative dance and best narrative awards, while MCK Kianjai and Tulia School won first place in Choral and Solo Verse respectively.

Goodrich School won first place in the spoken word category, while St. Peters Ishiara won the stand-up comedy.

In the Upper Primary category, Chogoria Girls Boarding Primary School took the best play and best solo awards, while Kianjeru Primary and Nkamathi Primary won in choral verse and cultural creative dance respectively. Ngwata Primary took second place in the cultural creative dance.

Muslim Primary won the modern creative dance category, while St. Francis of Assisi grabbed first place in the Narrative.

Machakos School for the Deaf and St. Lucy’s Igoji won best play and cultural creative dance in the Special Needs Education (SNE) Category.

The winning items will represent the Eastern Region at the Kenya National Drama and Film Festival between April 10-17, 2024, in Embu County.
