Children’s home in Sh20 million funds-drive

Kenya’s largest private child welfare organisation, SOS Children’s Villages, has launched an Sh20 million fundraising campaign to strengthen the quality of care for more than 350 children and youth under their care.
The funds will be used to improve shelter and general living conditions of the children in SOS Children’s Villages, Kenya’s two oldest facilities. The first SOS Children’s Village was built in 1972 in Nairobi’s Buruburu estate and the Mombasa one in 1979.
The two facilities take care of over 350 children and youth who have lost parental care, with 15,000 youth have lived in the homes since 1972.
SOS Children’s Villages Kenya National Director, Walter Odhiambo says continued use of the organisation’s facilities over the years has caused structural malfunctions. “This makes them costly to maintain and compromise the provision of services to children,” he says.
Kenya has about three million orphans. Due to such numbers, SOS Kenya has established additional homes in Eldoret, Meru and Kisumu counties. “We will be glad to see more disadvantaged children benefit from transformative services under the same if not higher quality facilities,” says Odhiambo.
The child welfare urges partners, donors and well-wishers countrywide to support the fund drive to help care for the vulnerable children.
Coming up are corporate dinners, an eight-day Mount Kilimanjaro climb challenge and calls for in-kind donations where well-wishers can send dry foods, learning materials, toiletries and household essentials.
