CS assures candidates of Form 1 slots
All candidates who sat this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination will get a chance to join secondary school to ensure a 100 per cent transition, the government said yesterday.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha, while releasing the results at the Kenya National Examinations Council headquarters, said all the 1,088,986 candidates will receive admission letters in the next two weeks.
Fair and transparent
Form One selection, Magoha said, will kick off this morning and is expected to end on December 2. He said the exercise will be fair and transparent.
“We have assured our children that all of them, and I repeat, all of them, will have a place in secondary school. The government, under the leadership of President Uhuru Kenyatta, has given us very firm instructions to ensure we carry out a fair and transparent and very quick placing of these children,”he said.
Last year, there were complaints from leaders and parents from some regions over claims that the ministry had disadvantaged some high-performing candidates through unfair selection after they were sent to schools that some considered “inferior”.
Scholarships offer
Magoha announced the government, together with external partners, was investing Sh8 billion to improve infrastructure in secondary schools as part of measures to guarantee 100 per cent transition.
To ensure children from poor families are not locked out, Magoha said the government will provide 9,000 scholarships, with a third or a quarter of them going to children living in slums.
The minister said the President had instructed that part of the scholarships, which previously went to 30 disadvantaged sub-counties, be given to the children in urban slums.
