Public school teachers to renew certificates every 5 years – TSC announces
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced that teachers working in public institutions will now be required to undergo training after every five years.
In a statement released on Wednesday September 22, TSC Secretary Nancy Macharia said that a total of 340,000 teachers will be enrolled to new modules that are set to be introduced.
She further stated that all teachers will have to part with Ksh6,000 in order to undergo the training per module. The teachers are required to train in the modules that add up to 6 and that will run for a period of 30 years.
Macharia noted that four institutions have been picked to offer the modules.
The institutions include; Riara University, Mount Kenya University (MKU), Kenyatta University and Kenya Education of Management Institute.
Macharia said the decision was necessitated by the need to have teachers follow the steps of other careers which include engineering and law.
“The move will see teachers put up to date with their profession. In addition, they will also work like other professionals including engineers and lawyers,” Macharia said.
She said that the commission has in the recent past faced challenges during negotiations for teachers as they are referred to as semi-skilled.
According to her the roll out will see those in the teaching profession command more respect, unlike in the past.
She notes that the new approach will ensure teachers are also engaged in conducting research projects and writing academic research papers, amove she says will see them improve the teaching quality in schools.
Teachers who will fail to attend the modules will not be affected when the commission considers its members for promotions.
The announcement comes just a day after TSC said that teachers will have to wait for four years before a review on their salaries is made.
In a circular, that acted as a guidance on how the CBA will be implemented until 2025, teachers will still earn their current salaries and allowances.
