The government has vowed to revoke title deeds of all grabbed forests in the country irrespective of the social status of the grabbers.

Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko yesterday said he had directed the chief conservator of forests Julius Kamau to hold talks with people who have grabbed forest land and come up with a mechanism on how all the land will revert to the government.

“Public land will never be privatised under my watch,” said the CS.

Former glory

Tobiko, who spoke on Wednesday when he led celebrations to mark the International Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, at Nairobi City Park, said most of the forest land surrounding Nairobi had been grabbed.

According to him, Ngong Road forest, which initially was 7,000 acres had been grabbed and only 1,000 acres now remains.

Last week, the government handed over City Park to Kenya Forest Service and other government agencies to rehabilitate and rebuild the park which has graves of the world war fighters and the second vice president Joseph Murumbi and his wife.

“Together with Nairobi Metropolitan Service, we will restore Nairobi to its former glory. We will rehabilitate all the parks, including Michuki Memorial Park, which  will soon be opened by the President,” he said.
