The Ministry of Education has agreed to allow back expelled students from Anestar Bahati Boys High School for the remainder of their examinations.

Principal Secretary, State Department of University Education and Research Simon Nabukwesi confirmed the 70 students have been allowed back but under strict supervision.

He said the decision was arrived at after a series of meetings by the Education ministry team over the matter and resorted to cancel the earlier resolve to expel them.

“We have met all the culprits and they are remorseful over the incident; however, they will face the law to ensure they become better citizens in future,” said Nabukwesi.

He added that they will be keenly monitored so that it could be more convenient for them to sit examinations from inside the school.

“It could have been inconsiderate to them and their parents if they could have sat examinations from outside, we have been kind to them since they may have been misguided,” he added.

The boys were  expelled after sneaking into their sister school’s dormitory in Nakuru county on Thursday last week.

Weak structures

Nabukwesi said the school risks being closed down over the issue saying investigations are underway and a resolution on whether to close down the school will be issued once they are complete.

He revealed they are also probing the conduct of the centre managers over their laxity in managing situations, which posed a security threat to the students and that of the girls.

“The ministry cannot tolerate such acts; this simply shows that the school is not living up to its educational objectives, such a school in my opinion should be closed down,” said Nabukwesi.

He affirmed that the ministry will not tolerate any form of indiscipline especially during exam periods calling on all centre managers to ensure everything is going on well in their areas of  jurisdiction.

Nabukwesi said schools will not be converted into breeding dens for criminal saying the incident at Anestar was unfortunate noting that such is not supposed to happen in a school that has proper structures.

“This incident should not have happened if indeed the school has a principal, a deputy and teachers on duty. It means this is not a responsible institution,” he added.
